Class of 2013 - Another Update

I have been following many hikers as they make their way along the trail to their goal of a mountain.  I have followed more than twenty people, but these I have kept track of on a spreadsheet and some of them on a map.  It was fun to watch them progress along the map and a little sad to see those whose markers stopped at a final place along the trail, their hike over for the time being.  Some would come back and continue on at one place or another, others moved back to their other lives, leaving the trail for a season, or forever, one never knows.  I'm pretty sure all that I have followed, no matter how long they stayed on the trail, will be back at some time or another.

A large number of those I have followed have been successful in their endeavour.  Three are still hiking.  Two towards their original goal of Mt Katahdin, and one who has flip-flopped, summited Katahdin and is now is heading south to where she jumped ahead, to hopefully finish in Harpers Ferry.

A few would get off the trail and come back later, realizing that the trail is a very strong draw.  It calls to you every day and wants you to walk it.  I feel it myself every single day and can't wait for my next chance to see a white blaze.  Whether it is one I have see and hiked by many times, or a brand new one that adds mileage to my total AT miles hiked.

So here is my latest update.  Congrats to all who have finished, good job to those who had to get off, and to those who still have some miles to hike, keep on going.  It is all good.  Green is finished, Red is done, Black is still hiking.

Class of 13

Even though my feet aren't on the trail, I still follow those whose feet are still hiking.

AT Map with tabs for each hiker I follow

Acorn 30-Mar-13 3-Jul-13 Harpers Ferry 1019 10.7

Blues Man continues to be the frontrunner of those I follow.  He is in the wilderness, the last 115 miles of the trail.  He should be done soon, if not already.

Right behind him is Lady Grey.  I passed her twice in PA when Lisa and I were hiking up there.  She is also getting close to the end.

Groundpounder and punkin pie continue to put up good miles and should be done soon.

Rash is still having fun and is in VT.

Boo Boo is also plugging away up in New York somewhere.

Karma got to Harpers Ferry and decided to Flip/Flop.  She went home to Philly for a few days and is heading up to Katahdin now.  She will be SOBO from here with no time constraints to summit before the mountain closes for the winter.

ODAT and 50/50 are off trail and done.  ODAT got what he came for and 50/50 had an achilles injury.

HotDog is also done.  It had been in the cards for awhile.  It just took her some time to realize it.  She also got all she needed out of her hike.  I will miss her awesome blog.  She was hiking with Apple Butter, so I have added her to my list and continue to follow her.  She just entered New York and is still going good, even though she really didn't like PA and dissed my home state as she left it.  :)

A also keep track of the rest of Shanty Town (Clever Girl, Dump Truck, Whistle and Grim).  They are near the end of PA I think.

Acorn is out there somewhere.  She went back to Chicago for two weeks to empty her apartment, but continued on around the fourth of July.  She is most likely in PA now.

PrayerWalker is maybe done.  I can't tell anymore.

Boo Boo is off and on with shin problems.

Rash jumped ahead to hike with friends.

HotDog is having a dilemma of whether or not she wants to keep hiking.

Blues Man if trucking along.

Groundpounder falls off the radar every once and a while, but comes back with a bunch of updates when he hits a town.

It is cool to see the different way each hiker updates and how often they update.

I am following others, but they are all displaying the same amount of progress and hardship as they make their way to Katahdin.

In a few days, my bride and I will be among them.

We will see you on the trail...

Class of 13 - Weekly (sorta) Update

Boo Boo seems to be suffering from shin splints and will be taking a couple days to heal.

The rest seem to be traveling well, each at their own pace.  Rash has his dog with him for now, Hot Dog and here group made a cool video when they walked 500 miles.  Guess which song they used.

Hike on Class of 13.

Class of 13 - Another Update

"borrowed" from Clever Girl's blog
Let's see where everyone is. We had a new start this week. Acorn started on her birthday, March 30th and is moving along nicely. No one has left the trail since last update and the two who were temporarily off, still haven't returned, but still seem to plan to. We shall see.

I follow a number of other hikers, but don't list them here.  A few of them are Ember and Passover a young couple that have just left their home state of NC for good.  Jessica in Progress and her husband Tom who are making their way through the Smokies.  Kaboose and Sassafras, a father, daughter team who seem to be having a great time.  Sassafras is quite young, (in middle school).  Hotdog has teamed up with a threesome of Clever Girl, Dump Truck and Apollo.  They seem to be having a great time together.

There's more, but that is all that come to mind for now.  I constantly fall down a hiker's rabbit hole when I stumble on their journal.  I love to hike along with them for a while until it is my turn.

On Another Note:
Lisa and I were discussing trail names yesterday.  When we did our hike last fall, I started calling her Lo Gear as she always slowed down on the down hills like she had shifted into low gear.  She mentioned yesterday that she liked it and I had thought she didn't care for it.  So she will probably be Lo Gear or whatever spelling she chooses when we hit the trial in a month and a half.

I have been El Jefe or just Jefe for a while now, but that name wasn't born on the trail, so I'm always open to something new.  I mentioned yesterday that Earth Tone may work for me as all my hiking clothes come in Green, brown, black, grey, tan, etc, you get the idea.  So maybe I can try that on for a while when we hit the trail.

Some others that have crossed my mind. Stiller Fan (I get a lot of comments on my tattoo), Scar (a reference to the huge scar on my arm from my last melanoma fight), AT-Tude (attitude), Awesome (not necessarily because I am, but I say that a lot) and many more I'm sure.

The trail giveith and the trail taketh away.

Here is a status update of the hikers I am following this year.  A couple got off trail, some for good, others to heal.  I removed a couple who don't journal much and added some new starters and two Warrior Hikers.

Class of 13 Update - 3/17

Let's see where St Patrick's Day finds our hikers.

I removed two hikers from my update list (Inchworm and Bush Whacker).  Inchworm hasn't made any updates, but I did see someone else mention her being on the trail.  Sometimes it is just too much to on-line journal when hiking.  Completely understandable.  Bush Whacker's posts are sporadic and he doesn't record location or miles much.  I will replace him with more prolific journalists.  I added Lady Gray to the list and 50/50 just started on Friday.  Lady Gray was hiking with Infinity, but has moved ahead, so she gets her own line now.  Female Sasquatch is now Hotdog, acquiring her trail name as she ate a delicious hotdog at Neel's Gap.

Here are the hiker's latest status:  Notes= date of last entry, location and total (AT) miles hiked.

Another 13 of 13 Update

Here is a quick update of the Thru Hikers I am following this year.  Happily for me, most of them are prolific updaters to their journals.  Some better than others, but I have plenty of reading each day.

It is really fun to follow along with these hikers and hear about the ups and downs and all the adventures and pains they are experiencing.  Some do very well updating their on-line journals, even though they are out there in the bush.

Here is an update of 14 hikers.  Some don't update much if at all and will probably fall off my list.  But if I see them down the trail, I will add them back on. Trail Name-Start Date-Last update and progress.

March-The Month of Thru Starts

My list of 13 Thru Hikers that I am following has grown to 21.  I have been checking the "Currently Hiking" section of Trail Journals and there are a few who started out in mid to late February and early March that have been posting regularly or interestingly, so I have started to read their journals.  I will keep with them as long as they stay on the trail and keep up their journals.

March is when the abundance of starts happen in the Thru Hiker world or "Trail World" as one of the journalists calls it and my list of 13 21 have the majority starting this month.  The weather has slowed some down and forced some hikers off, but there are those who chomp at the bit to get back on the trail and these are who I follow.  They give me motivation and I like reading about their adventures as they travel the land I hope to see in a little over two months.

First those who have started that I mentioned in an earlier post:

PrayerWalker is still off the trail as far as I can tell.  She had a mole removed and biopsied when she got off and is now dealing with that (basil cell carcinoma), but plans to return before too long.

Bazinga is moving along nicely and updating regularly.  His last position was 81.4 miles up the trail (plus the Approach) and he is doing great.  The one thing about Bazinga's hike so far is he is exactly duplicated one of my hike plans so far.  Each day he hikes the same mileage I have as a potential plan and stays in the same shelters or camping area.  The one difference is he stayed at the Blueberry Patch Hostel a day or so ago and that will be closed by the time we hit the trail.  So my plans are not complete bunk, at least not for Bazinga.

Those who are on the trail who I have started to follow since I established my 13 of 13:

Blues Man - A youngish gent who started on 16 February.   His last post was on the first of the month where he was taking a zero after reaching Fontana Dam.  He was staying in the Lodge.  It is likely that he has headed into the Smokies and is somewhat out of contact for a while.  I will continue to monitor.

Rash - Rash (start date 17 Feb) is another young man from NC who appears to be completely at home in the woods and on the trail.  He seems to be having a great time and his last update had him also sitting at the Fontana Lodge and awaiting to see what the latest storm was going to dump on the Smokies.  He is moving good and having a good time.

Groundpounder (aka Mace) - This 40ish looking guy's last know whereabouts was taking a zero in Franklin.  The name Mace came from when he was alone in a shelter with a can of bear spray.  He accidentally lit it off and maced himself out of the shelter.  I'm sure he isn't sharing that story with his trail mates, so the name if mostly being used by his guest book visitors.  He takes some boring videos of himself walking up a trail, with no dialog.  Just his breathing and the views.  GP started 18 Feb.

Boo Boo - Started 21st of February and his last log entry of the 3rd of March had him hiking through eight inches of snow as he tried to get 9 miles down the trail.  The temps are quite cold.  He is about 100 miles into his hike.

Bush Whacker - This guy is a multi-year hiker.  He attempted a thru in 06 and came off the trail with a serious case of Guillian Barre Syndrome which seriously fucks you up.  He came back in 2007 and finished his thru.  Since then, he appears to start the trail each Feb and go for a few weeks to a couple months.  He has also done the Florida Trail a couple times.

Those who have or planned to start from March 1st to March 6th:

Inchworm.  No recent entries or anything that shows she has headed to the trail.

Sole Sister is another new hiker to my list.  She was scheduled to start on 1 March, but I haven't seen any updates lately.  Lisa told me about her and her situation.  She is walking the trail for her long dead sister and has a heart breaking story about her.

Female Sasquatch - Starts today.  I am rooting for her. She seems well prepared and in the right frame of mind (whatever that is) and should do fine.

So there you have it.  Karma is due to start tomorrow and Infinity the day after.  Another five from my list plan on hitting the trail this month.  Good luck to all you Class of  2013.  I'm rooting for you all.

13 of 13 Update

PrayerWalker started the trail on the 14th of February, but only hiked for two days.  She started at Neels Gap as she had hiked the approach trail and up to Neels late last year.  The two days she hiked (a little over 21 miles) were cold.  It is February after all and even though she is in the southern state of Georgia, up in the mountains, winter still presides.  A bad weather report brought her off the trail.  She lives in GA so getting off the trail and home wasn't a big deal.  She plans to return to the trail soon.  I'm not sure on how much she will be able to update her journals while on the trail, but for now, she remains one of my Thirteen.

Bazinga is starting his hike today (the 27th).  His last update had him at the Lodge in Amicalola Falls State Park.  Hopefully he will be updating his journal regularily.  That is his intention at least.

Next to start is Inchworm from PA.  Her plan is to start on the 1st of March.

The 13 of 13

The first of my thirteen of thirteen (as I have decided to call them) will be starting the trail tomorrow.  PrayerWalker is the oldest of the females I will be following and is hiking for a cause.  She will hike for Homes for Our Troops.  You can find out more about it on here web page along with a link to the HFOT site.

PrayerWalker has a very strong faith and has recently recovered from a torn tendon in her ankle.  She is scheduled to start tomorrow the 14th.  I wish her luck in this great challenge.

Hopefully she will be able to post from the trail at least every once and a while.  I need my trail fix as I make all my plans for our upcoming section hike.

Go PrayerWalker.

Class of 2013 - Supplimental

I have added a couple more hikers who I will follow as they take on the AT and themselves:

I picked Jacko and his son since they are coming all the way from Australia to hike the AT.  I followed a couple last year who made it into  VA before injury took them off.  I think they were from New Zealand.

Jack and his son Daniel
Jacko
56
From Perth, Western Australia
Start date 22 March

Margo
PrayerWalker
64
GA
Start date?

PrayerWalker seems nice, but I fear she will have quite a challenge in the hike.  I will be rooting for her.

Leah
25
FL/MA
March 6

Leah AKA Female Sasquatch is another young hiker who currently lives in Boston and sleeps on her porch in her hammock.  She has a great sense of humor and a very positive attitude for the hike.

I will be following these three also as they hit the trail.

AT Class of 2013 - Showcase

One of my activities as I feed my obsession for all things Appalachian Trail is to read trail journals.  Either on the www.trailjournals.com site or other blog programs throughout the Interwebs that I stumble upon in my constant search for new content.

This year I have started a list of the interesting prep logs I have found and will follow until they summit Katahdin (or Springer) or get off the trail from the myriad of reasons that cause such an action or maybe their log just fades away as they find better things to do (like walk) besides write all they have seen, ate or smelled as they hike.

It is a therapy for me.

I have decided to profile 10 such perspective Thru Hikers here.  I know no one actually reads this blog, but maybe, someday, someone will stumble upon it and spend some time falling down my self-made rabbit hole.

My plan is to post updates of each hiker as they progress through their hike.  Maybe talk a little about what they are doing and how it affected me.  Also, I love comparing their journey to the small parts I have experienced on the trail and note what each of us did that was the same or different.

Statistically, only a few of these hikers will make it to their End Mountain, but I will wish them all the best of luck and hopefully at least some of them will make it all the way and I will be able to follow them as they make their final assent.

Here are the first 10 I have decided to follow.  It is very likely that some of these will not even start their hikes as life grabs them back to "reality" and prevents them from following their dream.  I will continue to replace or even add hikers as I find those that are making progress and blogging their accomplishments.

I will list them by expected departure date.

1.  Bazinga.  Bazinga is a 56 year old man from Southern Ohio.  He will be heading out on the 1st of March heading North.  He is a recently retired High School science teacher and cattle farmer who has been dreaming of hiking the AT for 20 years.

2.  Inchworm.  Inchworm is the daughter of a Pennsylvania coal miner who is making her second attempt at hiking the AT.  In 2006 she walked as Root, but has decided to take Inchworm for this hike as it describes how she was able to cover distance in relation to her hiking partners, her daughter and her boyfriend.  A knee injury ended the hike of this 56 year old hiker while in Tennessee.  A couple more mishaps happened as she attempted to return to the trail in PA until she had to call it quits for that year.  She too plans on heading out on the 1st of March.

3. Karma.  Karma is from Philly and I found quite a few of the other hikers from her blog roll.  She is preparing very well and I have a good feeling about her achieving her goal.  She plans on starting on the 7th of March and is 52 years old.

4. Infinity.  I came across Infinity's TJ a little while back and made a note of keeping track of her.  Seeing her listed on Karma's blog roll convinced me to commit.  Infinity is from Michigan and this will be her second attempt of a thru hike.  Last year she did a number of section hikes, but they just weren't enough.  She is 59 years old and is very active.  She has gathered a group of women to start the trail with which always is a good way to start.  Her planned start date is the 8th of March.

5. 50/50.  50/50 got his trail name by being directionally challenged.  It is about a 50% chance he will pick the wrong way to go when setting out.  50/50 is 55  and a retired Air Force veteran.  50/50 lives in Florida and plans on setting out on March 15th.

6. Butter Cup. Butter Cup is 60 years old I think and will head out from Springer on March 16th.  From her prep hikes, I'm guessing she hails from somewhere in or near North Georgia.

7. Acorn.  Acorn is the youngest of the hikers I will be following at somewhere in her late 20s.  She currently lives in Chicago and is a Microbiologist.  Her plan is to leave in late March.  She will be leaving behind a boyfriend and cat and will be taking a SPOT and harmonica.

8. 2-Dogs.  2-Dogs is a 50 year old man from Memphis, TN.  He plans to start on April 1st.  His kids are grown, he is no longer married and he owns his own business that he can set aside for a while.  Now is the time to make the attempt.

9. Hiking Home.  Another April 1st starter is Hiking Home, another 50 year old.  She lives in NH, hence her trail name.  She has just accomplished an early retirement form her corporate job and the time is now to hike the trail. She was planning on starting in February, but a case of frost nip on her toes has delayed that for a while.  Stay tuned....

10. Long Haul.  Long Haul successfully completed a thru hike in 2005 and started another in 2009.  That hike was ended with a toe infection that cost him his toe.  In 2010 he started from Springer again and blew out a knee near Erwin, TN.  After surgery and healing he re-started near Shenandoah where an intestinal issue delayed his hike again.  He continued on through MD and into PA, but the rocks did him in.  This year he plans to start near Kincora and continue from there.  Long Haul hails from Columbus, OH and is the oldest of those I will be following at 67 years old.  He plans to start April 14th.

Good luck everyone.
